Formed in 2018, The First Tee of Indiana-Greater Terre Haute is one of the newest Indiana program locations. The generosity of donors, community foundations and the City of Terre Haute led to the introduction of the First Tee’s National School Program in all 18 of Vigo County’s elementary schools along with St. Patrick’s school. The organizing committee is working with area golf courses in developing a schedule of green grass programs for this upcoming spring and summer. These classes will offer the First Tee’s Life Skills Experience for area youth.

The Life Skills Experience

Led by area golf professionals and dedicated volunteers, the Life Skills Experience classes will offer on-course lessons with our Nine Core Values integrated throughout the program. Participants ages 7-18 will learn golf skills and citizenship lessons while playing games and having fun. Look for our schedules to be posted soon. The following chart shows the breakdown of the Life Skills Experience curriculum.

Introduction to the game of golf with an emphasis on learning The First Tee Code of Conduct, core values, golf skills and healthy habits as well as appreciating the etiquette and rules of the game. Every participant must start at this level, regardless of their age or skill level.
Focuses on interpersonal skills, communication and self management skills.
The Birdie level focuses on emphasizing goal-setting, golf skills and the healthy habits.
Emphasizes resilience skills, conflict resolution, and planning for the future. Golf skills become a heavier focus at the Eagle level and the skills test becomes much more advanced.
In the highest and most advanced level of The First Tee, Ace participants learn how to give back to their community through a focus on volunteerism and education. Planning for the future, honing golf skills, and setting goals are major components to Ace level.

The First Tee of Indiana-Greater Terre Haute offers scholarships to kids on a need basis. Our goal, as a community, is to ensure every kid has a place to learn, have fun, and cultivate friendships. If you want to apply for a scholarship, you will have the option to do so during the on-line registration process. Any questions, please contact Luci Ross at lross@indianagolf.org.

The First Tee relies heavily on the help of volunteers to run our programs. While many opportunities relate to golf, we have opportunities off the course as well. Contact Luci Ross at lross@indianagolf.org to talk more about how you can get involved.  Our volunteers are caring, trustworthy adults that model of The First Tee’s Nine Core Values: Honesty, Integrity, Perseverance, Judgment, Responsibility, Respect, Courtesy, Confidence, and Sportsmanship.
