John & Kathy Postle Golf Learning Center
On October 19, South Bend’s Venues, Parks and Arts Department formally approved a 25-year partnership with First Tee that solidifies Studebaker Golf Course as a long-term home for First Tee activities.
This private-public partnership became possible through the incredible generosity of longtime Studebaker golfer, John Postle. Mr. Postle grew up in the neighborhood near Studebaker and spent many days in his youth walking or riding his bike down to the golf course. He and his friends played all day long for just 35 cents. For that one price, they played as many holes as daylight allowed. “The friends and the memories made here at Studebaker will always be very special to me,” Mr. Postle recently explained. The character and values Mr. Postle learned on the fairways helped him succeed in his businesses, which have now allowed him the ability to give back to the community and create opportunities for the kids of today and tomorrow. Mr. Postle’s substantial financial gift allows First Tee to construct a 2,800 square foot building attached to the current Studebaker Golf Course clubhouse. This spectacular new addition will be named the John & Kathy Postle Golf Learning Center.
The Center, anticipated to open in March 2021, will house an indoor putting green, a golf simulator, restrooms, lockers, media center with golf-related books and movies, and a classroom. These facilities will all be for the use of First Tee participants. In addition, a Wall of Achievement, showcasing the latest accomplishments of all current First Tee young people, will be placed in a public hallway between the current clubhouse and the new Learning Center. “This will be a ‘home’ for First Tee’s current kids and a safe, welcoming spot for new ones,” said Jenny Zimmerman, Michiana Site Director.
Mr. Postle went on to say, “When I heard that First Tee was interested in partnering with Studebaker, I knew that junior golf was going to flourish here in Michiana. Golf is just a game. However under the guidance of The First Tee, kids will learn principles that extend well beyond the golf course to help guide them in life. This is a wonderful opportunity for all junior golfers and I am proud to be involved with Studebaker Golf Course and The First Tee of Michiana.”
